Provision

There is limited provision in the local area in courses (at all levels) in the Hospitality and Hair and Beauty sectors. Of the provision that there is, only one course run in North Cornwall operates at Level 3 and all Level 4 provision is provided by Truro College (47 miles, no direct public transport link) and Cornwall College at the Camborne Campus (57 miles, no direct public transport link).

The extent of Post-16 provision in North Cornwall in these two sectors is:

Bodmin Community College, Bodmin
Beauty Therapy
L1 NVQ
Beauty Therapy L2 NVQ
Hairdressing L1 NVQ
Hairdressing L2 NVQ

Budehaven Community College, Bude
Design & Technology – Catering L1/L2 GCSE

Ultra Training Limited, Bodmin*
Drink Service
L2 NVQ
Food Service L2 NVQ
Food & Drink Service L2 NVQ
Hairdressing L1 NVQ
Hairdressing L2 NVQ
Hospitality Supervision L3 NVQ
Housekeeping L2 NVQ
Multi-skilled Hospitality Services L2 NVQ

* - Ultra Training Limited is a training organisation supporting work-based learning.

The proposed specialist ‘hub’ and local ‘spoke’ model that is proposed would therefore ensure an equality of access to courses across the district. In discussion with skills sector councils and economic development agencies, it would seem there is demand for, and it would be possible to run, a range of courses across the hospitality, catering, tourism and retail sectors, delivering in partnership with further and higher education partners.

Further/Higher Education

The Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) have undertaken a large scale research project to inform the most effective way to deliver their services across Cornwall. The results for North Cornwall show the demand for CUC services is widely spread across different levels of training and across subjects. The varying nature of demand and geographical spread of population provides a major challenge for the way services are delivered in the area. However, CUC are committed to the principle of facilities in North Cornwall, and have expressed their support of the development proposed here.

The rural delivery model proposed is very much in line with the ethos of the Combined Universities in Cornwall.
